Morgan’s Learning to Decode

by Beav on January 23, 2010

Have to share this brief family anecdote:

We went for a family dinner tonight and doing what we normally do to try to contain our 2 year old boy in public spaces.  We had one of his toy cars for him to keep him busy.

Morgan (4 years old) was itching to get her hands on it as it was the only toy we had.  She then asked my wife, “Momma, is it time for me to play with the C-A-R?”  She spelled it out!   She’s obviously been paying attention her mom’s attempts to speak in “code” around the kids and managed to pull off this “adult” moment.

My wife asked her, “How did you know how to spell car?”

She said, “Word World of course.”  (That’s a kid’s show about letters building words if you’ve not been living the PBS kids existence in recent history).

I’m impressed that she’s picking up the spelling and words, but I’m more impressed that she internalized a communication strategy used by adults to talk over children and she was able to employ it flawlessly to exclude her little brother.

Too funny.  Love that girl.
