Coordinating IGSL Beautification Day!

IMG_5502

An amazing opportunity came up as a result of my dad meeting a man in the U.S. whose organization likes to donate soccer equipment to kids and communities in developing nations. People here LOVE soccer, especially the international students.   As we explored this opportunity, IGSL seemed to fit the bill for what this man and his company like to be a part of.  It’s a pay it forward type of arrangement so we needed to find a way to bless the community around us.

This was PERFECT because the leadership of IGSL wants to build stronger relationships with the local community around us, but with the business and schedule it’s hard to orchestrate and plan.  But I was so excited for how much it would bless the kids and the regular soccer players here that I took on the job and negotiated with the local Barangay Captain (like a city council official) for IGSL to help with a 2 mile beautification effort in the community.

About 20 came – some students and some of the students’ children – and it was a huge success. The Barangay was surprised and blown away by IGSL’s initiative and effort and it was a big win to partner with some of the folks assigned to do this community service already.  Some of the work was tough and took a strong stomach (as Colin had a few challenging moments with various overpowering smells), but the result was great.

In addition to stronger community relationships (huge for future ministry opportunities), the soccer equipment will be a great blessing for the students here and the children on campus as well! Leading this was a cross-cultural experience, but totally rewarding!   People in the community have stopped me in the days since that work day to tell me how much it meant because no one outside their community has ever volunteered to serve their community that way – that it included so many people from different countries was mind blowing!

Partners in Ministry Class

IMG_5298

I (Christine) helped teach the introductory class for the Partners in Ministry Program this past term which all the 1st year wives go through.  It casts vision to wives for their role in establishing a foundation for a lifetime of ministry together as a couple.

One of the memorable sessions I did focused on forgiveness and women are still telling me how much it impacted them in their marriages and families.  This picture is from an end of the class banquet I led for the wives and their husbands which was a special time for the couples. The ladies prepared special expressions of affection to their husbands and honored them and we had a good time together talking about marriage and ministry.

One of the best things about being here is helping married couples who are called to the ministry learn how to be a team – both spiritually, emotionally, and in the ministry.  There’s so many pressures that couples in ministry face and without a good foundation it can be a difficult road.

Pizza Movement

I kept thinking to myself, “Maybe only at IGSL” and “This is so cool” over and over as I found myself in the middle of a Bible Study of Pizza Hut employees at 11pm at night after closing in one of the local malls.  We thought we were only meeting three of the workers, but ALL 10 workers had just closed down the store and settled down at a table for a Bible Study led by two IGSL students from Pakistan – Sharjeel and Azeem.

Sharjeel and Azeem and their wives love pizza and periodically visited this pizza hut and eventually began to have spiritual conversations and share the gospel with a couple of the workers.  One week the workers began to share great pains and burdens that opened a door for Sharjeel and Azeem to initiate a Bible study to learn about Jesus more.  One man’s wife had just converted to Islam and left him. Another woman’s husband was threatening to abandon her and her newborn son. Still another girl in her early twenties was fearful that she had breast cancer but had no money for treatment. Heartbreaking.

Sharjeel and Azeem asked me to come so I could coach them as they seek to essentially pioneer a ministry at this Pizza Hut and maybe surrounding restaurants. 11pm Bible Studies are not my thing, but I couldn’t say no! And they really did a phenomenal job.  A few of the workers were believers, but most were not.  They all seemed truly grateful for a chance to learn more about Jesus together – they were workers, but really were a tight community as well.

I would never have guessed at any point in my life I would be in a mall in the middle of the night coaching two Pakistani men on starting a ministry in a Pizza Hut with ALL of its closing shift employees.  But those are the kind of experiences we seem to have all the time here!  Please pray for Sharjeel and Azeem as they go every Wednesday on their own time (and they are very busy already) to minister and share the gospel with these workers and that they come to faith and that a leader is raised up who can take over for them.

We love teaching and serving students who really do have hearts for the Great Commission and are hungry for all the training they can get.  And you know what – every student is doing something like this on a weekly basis as part of their academic requirement. Sharjeel and Azeem already are pioneering other ministries weekly through their “Target Area Ministry” which they devote 3 hours a week to. Sharjeel is at a local high school while Azeem is working to start a ministry at a local company.  When students aren’t just gaining head knowledge, but experiencing transformation through actual ministry experience it really is a contagious atmosphere.

Thank you for praying for these guys and all the students and for these opportunities!!

Starting a Different Kind of Fire

Dear friends!!

As a result of several seasons of sowing and the recent success and fruitful impact IGSL has had on the police academy cadets, the IGSL Leadership Department has been asked to formally partner with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to conduct the official leadership trainings that officers are required to take in order for their promotions. This means we are close to formal partnerships with ALL 3 branches of the Philippines College of Public Safety (Fire Dept, Jail Management, and the Police Academy).

Some of my Filipino friends here have shared with me that the general reputation of the fire department here is very different than it is in the United States. They shared a local saying, “Better to have thieves than fire.”  The meaning of this essentially is that if the fire department was called not only would your house burn, but your valuables would be taken as well. Thieves steal valuables but at least the house doesn’t burn.  So clearly this is a great opportunity to make a spiritual and civic impact!

Starting tomorrow (Sat) we will host over 30 BFP Officers for about 52 total hours of class and training.  This will be a team effort from our leadership department, but I (Brian) will be covering about 8 hours of this focusing on team leadership, problem solving, and leading change.  But we have been given permission to provide a Biblical perspective on leadership and even have clear permission to communicate the gospel explicitly and unapologetically.  The bulk of my sessions are on August 23rd if you can pray that day!

Please pray for this. It’s a little wild and we’re designing as we go. Pray the training is received well and results in greater influence and opportunities for ministry in the BFP. Pray for me as I do my sessions as it’s a little intimidating! But it’s a great faith opportunity.

Thank you for praying!                  Brian & Christine

Celebrating the 4th

IMG_5143 - Version 2

Celebrating the 4th We had a good time celebrating the 4th of July – I (Brian) have celebrated the 4th of July now in 5 different countries and it always seems more meaningful because we want to stay connected to home. But it was also really cool to have friends from the Philippines, Pakistan, Tonga, and India be excited to celebrate with us and learn a bit about why we celebrate this holiday.

As you can see from Colin (aka Captain American), it was important to the kids too 🙂 He is holding a “sparkler” which practically functioned more like a blowtorch. We’re thankful no kids were harmed in the enthusiasm and celebration – the fireworks restrictions are a little less strict here 🙂

Small Group

ISG (Iron Sharpening Group)

Part of every faculty’s responsibility is to shepherd a small group for discipleship and mentoring. We will do 2 different weeks of ministry together in a few months and we meet together every week for accountability, discipleship, and development.  Christine and I are both leading groups this year. We’ll introduce her ISG in our next update if we can get a picture of them all together.

Facilitating such a multi-national and multi-ethnic group is challenging, but it’s pretty rich and rewarding too. This is where so much on the life on life impact can be made here!

Hundreds of Police Come to Faith!

The above picture is from 1 of the 4 Philippines National Police Academy leadership retreats IGSL conducted over the past few weekends. Over 850 cadets heard the gospel, over half indicated they surrendered their lives to Jesus Christ!

Friends,

Thank you for praying for the police academy cadets who went through a one day leadership and spiritual retreat (we did 4 of these with over 200 at each).  The result of several years of sowing into relationships and building trust with the PNPA resulted in an invitation for us to host these cadets for a retreat focused on character development in leadership.

Over 500 of the 850 police cadets indicated they surrendered their lives to Christ! Now you may have suspicion at those numbers like I did when I first heard. And culturally, there is greater receptivity to the gospel here in general.  But it was a powerful time of leadership training focused on character and the heart – which provided a great opportunity to give witness to the gospel and the true source of life change and transformation.

It was an emotional time. One of the students in my Transforming leadership class right now (and a guy I play basketball with every week), Marvin, spent 9 years in prison where he came to Christ and sensed a call to enter the ministry.  He shared his story and also shared his experiences with the police – both the good and ethical police as well as the corrupt.  The audience was silent and eyes were big as Marvin shared. This is part of what God used to prepare their hearts when one of the police officers involved with our ministry there presented the gospel.

Follow-up is happening right now. But how do you follow up over 500 new or re-committed believers?  That’s what we’re trying to figure out right now!  Follow up has begun and we’re getting some nearby churches to the PNPA involved as well.  There is a new Saddleback church plant here in Manila and the pastor is an IGSL graduate and former faculty – they are helping in the follow up too as we try to get face to face with each of those cadets to help ground them in what it means to follow Christ and get them connected to local churches.

The amazing thing is the PNPA is giving access for us to follow up and has requested that we would help them in a more formal way. We are exploring offering a leadership certificate or some kind of partnership that would allow us to continue to impact this area as God is clearly at work. But leadership corruption is one of the biggest issues in this country right now and IGSL is strategically positioned to make an impact in places like the PNPA, the military, and government.

But please give thanks to God with us because lives have been transformed!  Please pray for continued follow up, that cadets get connected to local churches, and that God would continue to strengthen the partnership between the PNPA and IGSL. This a great opportunity for ministry, but also for society to be impacted and transformed as well.

    Thank you for praying!!

Morgan & Colin in Myanmar Wedding!

What an amazing experience. Morgan and Colin were asked to be the flower girl and ring bearer respectively in a wedding last week between two students from Myanmar who met here at IGSL and after 2 years of studies decided to marry.  What an amazing experience. The Hina ceremony was amazing and the wedding was just as special.  Just an incredible time for the IGSL family and how incredible to experience a Myanmar wedding.

The bride was in our Christian Marriage class last term and the groom said that he was thankful because it helped as they were processing getting married and joining their callings together for ministry in Myanmar.  I got to know the groom the day I worked with 9 students to get supplies loaded up at a dock in Manila to be shipped to Tacloban after Yolanda.  I’ll always remember him looking at me after working together during the day at he said, “I’ve been watching you for a couple months. You’ve spent a lot of time with Asians before coming here haven’t you.” It was a moment of being thankful for how I grew up and for Epic Movement especially.

Check out some of the pictures from the wedding!! Please pray for them.  The bride is in my Transforming Leadership class this term so that’ll be fun.
