Street Kid Church Planters

Church Plant to Street Kids

Another one of the churches that I and my team trained and coached during our ministry week was this 2 year church plant which is targeting street kids.  In the picture above – you’ll see 4 young boys that all use to be street kids and street performers and more or less homeless. The pastor and his wife led them all to the Lord and now these boys are part of shaping the strategy of the church to effectively reach their friends and youth just like them.

It was really fun having them a part of the trainings – they had great ideas and they were really motivated by a vision of seeing Christ transform the lives of kids more or less living on the street.

Mountain Peoples Ministry!

Hello!

We pray you are enjoying the fall. There is no fall here and we miss the changing colors, cooler temperatures, and yes – football as well! But we are having some fun as Christine’s parents are here for a couple weeks and that has provided some great lift and encouragement to everyone. We’re getting away this weekend altogether so please pray for renewal and refreshment!

God has been faithful and we want to thank you for praying for IGSL’s “Ministry Week” which took place a couple weeks ago between the terms.  My team consisted of my small group and a few of their wives spent the week in Meycauayan, which is in the Province of Bulacan just a half hour north of IGSL.

As the title of the email suggests part of our week of ministry was spent partnering with a local church doing outreach and evangelism as well as some leadership training at a local high school and college (see lower right).  And the other half of our week was spent resourcing and training pastors from as many as 7-8 churches in the area including the team above which is preparing to plant a church among a community of mountain peoples about 4 hours from Manila.

The team above was a highlight – being able to serve this dedicated and passionate team that is deeply burdened to reach a particular people group here in the Philippines that is quite remote. It was perfect timing because they were stuck – they didn’t know how to develop the leaders they need to lead the ministry there moving forward.  So over two days I and some of my students walked them through a process of planning and strategizing how they can take the next step to see their vision fulfilled.  Do you see the older gentlemen in the middle of the picture above – he was incredible. So much passion and hunger to learn and steward every opportunity to glorify God!

This was a great example of partnership in action and it’s fun being able to bring timely training and perspective to faithful people who God has called to make a difference for the kingdom of God.  It was a great week also of modeling the ministry for my small group and coaching them as many of them were doing things they weren’t used to doing! There was a lot of spiritual warfare during the week as well, but God provided as needed throughout.

We exposed triple that to the gospel and did discipleship training for a couple churches that really are wanting to build a culture of multiplying disciples in their congregations. But for my team it was fun watching them take turns leading and getting valuable ministry experience with coaching and feedback. It was very transformational for them.

It was awesome feeling like we (including you!) made a difference – not just in the immediate evangelism, but also in the empowering of churches to fulfill their God-given visions and calling. These experiences are just as much a part of our students development and education as are the Greek and Biblical studies classes and it’s encouraging to see their faith!

Thanks for praying!

Come Help Build A Playground! from Brian Virtue on Vimeo.

Dear Friends!

I (Christine) mentioned last month we had a BIG project in the works that I’ve been coordinating.  Before you go any farther CLICK THE VIDEO LINK! above with Morgan and that will tell the story of what God has been bringing together over the past year!

When we got to IGSL one of the first things I thought was related to how sad and scary the playground was here.  Sad in that it wasn’t very nice and functional.  Scary – in that it wasn’t safe at all.  A few kids had ER trips last year because of splintered wood or fierce metal corners. Many moms actively try to keep their kids away from the playground!  And there’s A LOT of kids here and they need places to play and there’s not a lot of options.

Given that we have some friends with an organization and ministry called Kids Around the World that specializes in building first-rate playgrounds in strategic ministry contexts around the world, I began to dream a bit and explore the options.  The Lord began to orchestrate some really fun things and before we knew it, a playground short-term mission project was being formed!

It’s been remarkable and unbelievably fun that the primary partner with us thus far has been Morgan’s former school which is connected to our home and sending Church,  Lakewood Christian Schools (LCS).  They are going to be raising money for the playground project in their weekly chapel services and this week they played this video and kicked off the campaign! It’s really an incredible gift to have such a supportive community and it’s been so encouraging to Morgan who still feels very connected to the school and her friends.

We’ve shared before but every year there are about 60 to 70 kids from about 20 countries who are living on the campus of IGSL  Over the next 10 years, almost 400 kids total are going to have lived on the campus of IGSL for 2, 3, or even 4 years!

With the help of LCS, Kids Around the World, and maybe you too if the Lord leads, the dream that these kids would have a reliable, safe, and fun playground is coming alive!

A short-term team will be coming the week just after Easter to help install the playground and do some Vacation Bible School with the kids here (April is Summer in Manila!).  In fact, the Principal and Vice-Principal of LCS are coming as part of that team as well as some good friends and ministry partners.

If you’re interested in joining the team let us know, but you also can give online here to the project itself (not our personal staff account) to help provide a great playground for these children and incredible families that are getting equipped to impact lives and nations for Christ – some in some very difficult places.  Please pray for these kids and families!

But how fun!  Please watch and share the video even with your friends, Bible studies, or on facebook too if you feel led!

Salamat Po!

September Prayer Requests!

Brian’s Transformational Leadership class last term discussing how to contextualize leading change in different regions of Asia.

Prayer Requests!

Besides Pastor Tandin, you can pray for us as we start a new trimester this week – and honestly both of us are fried and feel pretty run down.  We both have been doing too much and probably need to slow it down a bit.

I (Christine) am teaching my heaviest load so far as I will teach the class on relational evangelism for the Partners in Ministry Program.  I will be teaching them to share their faith, catalyze spiritual conversations through question asking and dialogue, and training them in the basics of evangelism. It’s a lot on top of homeschooling on all the special projects (playground) I have going on so please pray!

Brian is teaching the foundational leadership course, servant-steward leadership, to most of the first year students this trimester. The class includes 5 students from the Marines who are studying leadership and also learning how to do military ministry. As common now as “leadership training” is in the U.S., this is the first time many of these leaders are ever being exposed to leadership training grounded in the Scriptures and the person of Christ.  He’s also teaching a class on the theology and practice of community and relationships.

And please pray for the family.  The last couple weeks, ironically after our last glowing update, has been tough and a little discouraging for the family. I think we’ve all been ready to buy return plane tickets at multiple points over the past week or two. Pray for us, pray for Morgan still as it feels like we’ve taken a step back with her here the past couple weeks.  But my parents are coming again in a week so pray for our time with them and that it renews and recharges us a bit!

Brian will share next week all that God did during ministry week with his small group, but for now thank you so much for praying and making a difference in the world through partnering and praying. We continue to be amazed at what God is doing here!

Love,
Christine for Brian and family

Arrested Grad Update – Please Keep Praying!

Thank you for praying for IGSL grad Pastor Tandin in Bhutan who had been arrested and held for much of the past year.  It was very discouraging to hear that he was sentenced with a 4 year prison term in a prison with very rough conditions ultimately for accepting outside money for Christian activity inside Bhutan (not the original accusations or why he was arrested).

Several events and seemingly divine orchestrated events have taken place where Tandin was granted bail, allowed to return home for the appeal, and was granted a postponement of the appeal due to a landslide that blocked his travel this week.  He did finally submit his appeal orally and in writing.  He was suprisingly allowed to return home while awaiting the final decision of the judge.  Tandin’s partner Pastor David was allowed to pay a large fine in lieu of jail time because the total sentence was under 3 years.

Pray for this judge and that Tandin’s penalty would be reduced to no more than a monetary fine at most! He has a wife and 3 young kids as well.

On October 7th, IGSL along with CCC International will be having a worldwide day of prayer which we do twice a year.  The focus for us for much of the day will be praying for the persecuted church.  We invite you to take time on the 7th or anytime before that to join us praying for the Church in places like Bhutan, N. Korea, China, the Middle East, and South Asia.

Here is an article you can read more from on Pastor Tandin’s situation so you can pray!

IGSL Grad Arrested and Sentenced – Please Pray!

IGSL Grad Arrested & Sentenced

About 6 months ago we shared a prayer request about a 2008 IGSL Graduate from Bhutan who was arrested and held for a long period without formal charges.  The charges at the time related to evangelistic activities in Buddhist Bhutan. Until 2008 the Church was underground in Bhutan and it’s still not safe to evangelize in many places openly. The charges however shifted to accepting outside money for Christian activity inside the country (foreign funding – i.e. “financial support”).

As we’ve followed the story through many here who taught him and knew him and his family, it’s been a difficult journey though God has shown himself faithful in many ways. Pastor Tandin rejoiced at his original hearing because most in his situation would be tried without a fair hearing because most evangelistics do not speak the native Bhutanese language, but are Nepali culturally. Most arrested Christians submit a 2-3 page defense at most, but Tandin submitted a 13 page, well researched defense using Bhutan’s own Constitution. He credited IGSL for giving him the research skills to give such a defense.  And like the Apostle Paul, Pastor Tandin preached the gospel along the way – in the courts and while being held.

We’ve been praying as his trial finally was held this week after several postponements.  It has it the community hard here that Tandin was sentenced as guilty and given almost 4 years in prison. The charges, from what it seems, are not even what were originally filed and are not true.  His colleague Pastor David was sentenced to 2 and 1/2 years as well.  They have 8 more days from this email going out to file a formal appeal, but please pray that they are granted bail so they can return home to their families. Pastor Tandin has a wife and 3 small kids.

It’s a sobering reminder of the cost of discipleship for many of the students at IGSL and many of the Christians around the world.  It’s humbling and compelling to be in a position to train and mentor these courageous men and women of God as they prepare to lead in some of these countries!  You can also pray for Gopal and Leia, a newlywed couple from Bhutan that I just spent the week doing ministry with.  Gopal is Tandin’s nephew and is in the small group I am mentoring. He is training at IGSL for his calling as an evangelist in Bhutan. Pray that God is glorified, but that Tandin is granted bail and that the appeal goes in his favor.

Here is an article you can read more from on Pastor Tandin’s situation so you can pray!

We’ve enjoyed the chance to get away for a couple nights as a family before the next term starts.  We’ve been able to experience some cultural shows and see some of the traditional dances of the Philippines.  Morgan even got called up to be a audience volunteer to learn one of the bamboo dances!

Maybe the highlight was an educational and experiential demonstration of how to wear the traditional “Malong” which is basically what Indians and Indonesians call a “Sarong.”  The girls AND guys of our family dressed up in various traditional styles as you can see in the pictures above.

Most interesting though was the style that most Muslim women wear, which is common in the Southern Philippines (Mindanao). The ladies all got a chance to feel what it would be like to wear one of those full body coverings that only the eyes are visible through.

It’s a reminder – all cultures involve so much depth and layers to learn.  It’s easy in ministry to want to just skip to what we think works and get results as fast as possible, but learning culture is essential to effective mission because it shows what is meaningful to people. We’re thankful to be able to have these experiences with our children! Check out Kaelyn below!

You are impacting many lives through your prayers and financial generosity! We pray you are encouraged.  God Bless!
