I just finished Teaching to Change Lives by Howard Hendricks. This book has been around for about 25-30 years so it’s not new, but it reads new.
I’ve heard Dr. Howard Hendricks several times in person going back I think all the way back to high school. He’s been a professor and master communicator, but his mark has been in his effectiveness in teaching and raising up leaders. This book captures so much of his personality, wisdom, and style.
It’s an easy read – you could read it in a few hours, but it helps bring focus and clarity to how you think about your role as a communicator, teacher, or educator. This book is a gem and worth going out of your way to read it.I’ll highlight a few things in the coming week or two from the book, but I’ll leave a couple quotes that capture some of the tone of the book.
“Teaching is the assembling of a time bomb in a classroom, marked for explosion at a later date and in a different location.” pg. 103
“You can impress people at a distance. But you can impact them only up close. And the closer you are to them, the greater and more permanent the impact.” pg. 89
“Teaching is causing. Causing people to learn…Learning is change.” pg. 83
