So I’ve started watching Star Wars: The Clone Wars with my young son. You never know when there’s going to be some good wisdom – and should we be surprised that Master Yoda drops some wisdom every once in a while? I think not.
Here’s Yoda’s advice to the marginalized…..
“To answer power with power, the Jedi way it is not. Danger there is, in this battle, of losing who we are.”
Ok – so maybe I stretched the application there just a little bit, but it’s good wisdom for anybody on the margins trying to figure out how to work for change, but not lose their identity in the process through trying to match power with power.
But it can be tempting!
Justice isn’t achieved by power grabbing, though there are battles worth fighting. Transformation isn’t experienced for the future generations if new leadership doesn’t find an alternative to the raw exercise of power as the solution for injustice. Such a path erodes values and identity and ultimately power itself will remain master.
So let’s take Yoda’s advice – let’s keep fighting the battles that need fighting, but be careful to not to lose who we are.
What do you take away from Master Yoda?
