A helpful concept to all forms of development and formation is “learning in encounter.” A recent lecture / paper on the topic can be found here. In reflecting on this topic, it’s fascinating to think about what it means to encounter the other right now. Not just someone who is different, but really anyone! The nature of what it means to encounter is changing and being re-shaped through the limitations of a pandemic.
In education and training, one temptation and tendency is that many are using technology for convenience, as a default response to the limitations of the day. Yet, less are ensuring that such mediums are creating spaces for true learning to take place in connection with others. This is a key challenge when considering online education – much design is conducted for convenience. So self-paced courses or courses with minimal engagement are where learning is happening. Learning is not necessarily happening in encounter with another or with others.
A need in the coming years is for educators and trainers to shift from designing for convenience to designing for connection. This is the context of learning where transformation happens, the kind of transformation that equips people with the character and tools to face their realities. Learning in encounter not just humanizes the other, it can humanize one’s self and the broader situation as well. Encounter changes the way we see as we learn in connected ways.
