Unlocking Leadership Mindtraps was one of my favorite books to read over the past year. Just an interesting and research-based book on human, social, and organizational behavior. The author addresses five main mind traps that end up sabotaging good decision making, healthy choices, and wise action.
These are the 5 ways leaders get trapped that Berger unpacks. Leaders are….
-
A Leader’s Desire for a Simple Story Blinds Him/her to a Real One
-
Just Because It Feels Right Doesn’t Mean It Is Right – Leaders can be Trapped by the Sense of Rightness
-
A Leader’s Desire for Harmony and Alignment Robs Him or Her of Good Ideas
-
Leaders Can Be Trapped By Control – Trying to Take Charge Strips You of Influence
-
Leaders Can Be Trapped by EGO – Shackled to Who They Are Now, The Leader Can’t Reach for Who They’ll Be Next
This has some elements of Kahneman’s Thinking, Fast and Slow and ways that heuristics and mental shortcuts get in the way of wise action. But This was a great presentation. It didn’t have a lot of extra fat to it. It was loaded with insight and wisdom and is a real help to leadership critical thinking. I highly recommend this one if you’re wanting to jump into the area of leadership assumptions, social psychology, and decision making I think it’s a really engaging book. More critical thinking is never a bad thing these days!
