I got a recommendation a bit ago that this was a great book so I was excited to read Win the Heart: How to Create a Culture of Full Engagement by Mark Miller. Miller has been a key player in Chick Fil A’s success and reputation of heaving a healthy culture of ownership and engagement.
The four pillars of this book are Connection, Affirmation, Responsibility, and Environment. That’s the leadership philosophy captured in CARE and there’s a lot of practical anecdotes explaining the importance of each and showing how each one can be nurtured in an organization’s culture.
I wouldn’t say what I read was revolutionary given the amount of things I read in the same genre, but it was captured with great simplicity and authenticity which I think says a lot about what it takes to produce CARE in a culture – if you can’t do it simply and authentically, then you probably don’t have it. So that was one of my takeaways from the book – but ultimately it’s a powerful reminder that the relational posture we take in our work and ministry shapes and drives the culture and provides the interpretive framework people will use to make meaning out of their daily tasks and interactions with one another.
If you feel like your work and leadership is getting too rote or getting too programmatic or task-oriented, this is a great corrective and vision for more.
