The Significance of Kindergarten for the Future!

This week we sent off Morgan to her first week of Kindergarten!  She loved it!  We asked her to rank it on a scale of 1 – 10 and she gave it a 130 – so we’ll take that as a good sign!  It’s so fun to see her take this step for her and we’re happy with her situation right now.  We’ve had our share of moments reflecting on when our little “3 pounder” entered this world almost 10 weeks early and on all of the challenges since then.  It’s a landmark moment for her and for us given how much we’ve invested!

But we didn’t want to just highlight our own daughter!  Did you know that the current Kindergarten class nationally can help us prepare for ministry to the coming generation of high school and college students? The question we want you to ask with us is this:  what will ministry need to look like in 12-13 years to make a significant impact for Christ with the generation that we only know now as Morgan and her friends? Will those on the frontlines of youth and collegiate ministry be ready?  And for some of us depending on geography – are we prepared to meet the current reality?

I recently saw a USA Today article at a newstand that had on the frontpage an article on some of what today’s kindergarteners reveal about the changing demographics of our country.  I found a brief version online here. Essentially, the demographics are changing rapidly and signalling what many have been predicting for years – that in about a decade Caucasians will be a minority in this country.  Will ministry efforts reflect that change?

In some places, like where we live, the future is now as it relates to the shifting movement from an “ethnic minority” to an “ethnic majority.”  Why is this important?  I hope it does not come as a large surprise, but we believe that many and perhaps most ministries and even churches are significantly under-equipped to meet the cross-cultural ministry challenges that these kindgarten demographics show us are coming.  Will the same models and strategies and methodologies that have been successful with Caucasians over the years be effective with those of other ethnicities now and in the future?  Not likely.

While some we have interacted with don’t understand why we have chosen to serve in an ethnic ministry or why we are working now with Asian-Americans, kindergarteners today are a prime example of why we are doing what we are doing RIGHT NOW! We see what is on the horizon and it’s so motivating for us to help equip leaders and laborers all over the country to meet the present and future cross-cultural realities on the college mission field and beyond with character, humility, vision, and skill. We’re working with Asian-Americans now and pioneering ministries and tools and models because we can envision how our efforts are and will be critical to the overall efforts to reach every person of every ethnicity in the coming generations of students.

So the next time you see a Kindergartener or think of Morgan, we want to encourage you to pray for our ministry and impact (among others) on the current reality AND the future reality of effectively giving every single student an opportunity to experience life transformation in Christ and the demographics on the college campus and in the country!
