IGSL Grads in Nepal

IGSL Alumni in Nepal

God is at work in Nepal as well – while we are seeing the pain and grief through the eyes of our Nepalese community and alumni here, we are also seeing God at work through them. We are tracking some of our alumni via facebook and it’s been wild. A recent post from some friends we spent some time with last fall had them sleeping outside because the buildings were damaged. They moved outside, but then heavy rains set in and they tried to set up makeshift tents.  Most recently our friends reported having to seek other places of refuge because of a roaming wild tiger. This is how many are living in Nepal right now!

Two graduates from a year ago were in my (Brian’s) small group and are currently ministering in different areas around Kathmandu. Pray for them and other alumni and those that are just graduated from IGSL and returned to Kathmandu only to experience this earthquake 3 days later. Several of them have experience in some of these situations having been part of much Typhoon Yolanda relief here in Manila.

Pray God uses His church in Nepal for His glory and draws the hurting to Him. All our alumni in Nepal are working to mobilize churches and communities to bring physical aid as well as emotional and spiritual care to the thousands of grieving Nepalese.

Right now we have several alumni and one faculty couple who just went to visit our alumni working to get some basic relief going. Rajen and Kumar’s hometown Sindhupalchuk right now is not accessible by roads right now due to earthquake damage and the people there do not have food.  Our team there is using on hand money and what they can get their hands on to load a truck full of food to take there.  Their prayer request is that today that by the time the truck is loaded with food – that the Lord would make a way for the road to be repaired so the truck can get through.  This is immediate and emergency aid. Longer term efforts will be coordinated through GAIN – CCC’s disaster relief agency. Thank you for praying!

Praying for Nepal – Grads Just Arrived!

You no doubt have seen the devastation caused by the recent earthquake in Nepal. We have experienced this tragedy through the eyes of the Nepali community here at IGSL as well as through the eyes of Nepali graduates. IGSL has the largest single Nepali community in the Philippines and it has been crushing to see their pain and loss in this.

Amazingly, it was less than a week ago where we said goodbye to several fresh graduates from Nepal who then they flew with two of our faculty colleagues to Kathmandu – and three days later – this killer earthquake hit.

Open Air Hospital Since Many Facilities Are Destroyed

We know you are already praying – but please pray specifically for our loved IGSL alumni and faculty.  Here’s one Facebook entry of our faculty member from Nepal who is here in Manila and who just got word that his aunt was crushed to death during the first earthquake. He is our friend and neighbor. Last night he posted this:

Dear friends, please continue to pray for our family and friends in Nepal. After the powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake yesterday, there were more than 60 aftershocks today including a 6.7 magnitude aftershock which added more to the destruction. My father said the 6.7 aftershock completely wiped all the remaining houses in our village as the epic center of it was near our province.

Our brothers and sisters are very scared because of those aftershocks. They were preparing to sleep out on the open areas as the night approaches there. But, it just started raining there which makes it even more difficult for them to spend this night under the sky. Please, pray for God’s comfort, protection and provision for all the victims of this deadly earthquake. Let us join our hearts and hands to do what we can do to help our brothers and sisters who are suffering in Nepal.

I (Brian) have 2 Nepali students in my small group that I mentor and this is extremely difficult for them. They are working to return home to help in the relief.  They both come from Sindhupalchok which has the 2nd highest casualty totals outside of Kathmandu and almost all the buildings were leveled there including both of their family homes. Please pray for Kumar R. and Rajen among the dozens of other Nepali students here.  God is at work and we will share a couple brief things below, but there is much mourning and sadness as the death toll recently passed 3000.

After almost a year of vision and planning – God willing this next week the dream will become reality.  Christine caught a vision to serve the families and children here through partnering with Kids Around the World to have a new playground installed – one that would be safe and would better accommodate the number of small kids on campus.

A year later a team of 26 is coming to install the playground, serve the IGSL, and serve the local community here.  Here’s how you can be praying:

  • Next week, all 26 people are either currently flying to Manila or about to. Please take a moment to pray for the travel of this team – especially those with kids.  There’s been talk of another Typhoon this weekend so pray for smooth and safe travels.
  • The team will be conducting a Vacation Bible School with an estimated 150 kids from the local community – many of these kids will be from squatter communities and there’s a great opportunity, especially after Holy week here, to point children to Jesus and continue to build the relationship between IGSL and the local barangay (local village/district).
  • For the arrival of the playground.  God has been faithful – even a few days ago we wondered if the playground would arrive on time but just got confirmation it will be here Monday. Pray for God’s provision for a few things on this front.
    • For small trucks to transfer the equipment. The truck coming is too big to make it to the campus given the windy roads and sharp turns. We need to find small trucks to shuttle the playground from a main road to campus.
    • All this has to happen at 11pm or midnight Monday night for a variety of reasons. Pray for manpower as we have to work in the middle of the night for a few hours and that the rumored typhoon to come bypasses our area.
  • Pray for supernatural energy and endurance.  It’s hot and humid and there’s a lot of jet lag to battle.  Pray for strength to serve through the physical challenges.
  • Pray that the team encounters the Lord in a powerful way here and that their hearts for the world grow. It’s such a unique place to get a picture of how God is at work.
  • Pray that we serve well as a family and for Christine as she’s put in so many hours over the past year to prepare things here for the team. Our kids are excited to host too and we’re excited to spend time with some familiar faces!

Thank you for praying!  We will be posting updates on facebook and Morgan will probably post some updates on her blog morganinmanila.comas well.

Time for Farewells

Preparing for Farewells

As the school year comes to an end soon and graduation approaches, it means about 1/3 of the students and their families here will be moving on in about 2 weeks. So we will have to say farewell to men and women we have come to love.  But not just us – our kids will have to goodbye to many of their friends as well. It’s bittersweet.

This is part of the deal – it’s what we’ve signed up for and what we’re about – sending Christ-centered leaders who have the character, skills, and vision to have multiplying ministries throughout the world.  But it is a loss to no longer do life with some of these people and we will all miss this class – especially since we’ve lived side by side most of this group for almost 2 years!

PIM Graduation 2015

Partners in Ministry
Graduation!

Last week I (Christine) participated in the graduation of the couple dozen Partners in MInistry Certificate students who have completed the program.  It was a great time to honor their hard work, their spiritual growth and transformation, and their development as ministry leaders that can partner with their husbands in ministry.

It’s been a blessing to have taught many of these women in the classroom and spent time investing in some of them in my small groups.  They are some amazing women.  Pray for them as many of them are preparing to return to their ministry context (or country) to faithfully invest in the Great Commission. I will miss so many of them!

Global Leadership Consortium

Global Leaders!
Last week IGSL hosted Campus Crusade for Christ International’s “International Leadership Consortium” which included several of CCCI’s Global Vice-Presidents and many of the leaders of the other CCCI seminaries worldwide. IGSL has sister schools in Singapore, East Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Nigeria, and several other African nations.

By God’s grace it went well and it served as an encouragement and vision for some of what needs to take place worldwide at all of these schools for greater effectiveness and stewardship of our calling.

The week was a great experience of collaboration and discerning God’s leading for these schools for the future.  It was an amazing time of fellowship with pastors, leaders, and scholars from so many continents! And we got to see a couple old friends – one of which was the staff member who presented the opportunity to come to IGSL to me 2 1/2 years ago!  It’s fun feeling like we are a part of a global effort to raise up Christ-centered leaders who are multiplying disciples and impacting society for Christ.  And one of the fun things is that the door may be opening for more students from Africa to come to study at IGSL!

“My World Is So Much Bigger…”

Morgan is 10!!!!

Morgan turned 10 this past week!  She has really been growing up this past year and we couldn’t be prouder of who she is becoming.

She spontaneously shared this with her friends at her party, “Before coming here, my world was just my family, my school, and my church. But now my world is so much bigger.”

When we wonder, and honestly sometimes doubt how this experience is impacting our kids, these moments really are humbling and renew our trust in the Lord!

Many of you journeyed with us 10 years ago when Morgan came into this world about 10 weeks early. Both Brian and I have not been able to celebrate Morgan’s 10th birthday without giving thanks to God for the ways so many have prayed for her and been part of her journey – from when she was born at 3 1/2 lbs to this past year.  We are so thankful for the way you pray for us and our family and are such a big part of what God has done in our family. Thank you!

As we have shared in our time here, IGSL is committed to giving its students field ministry experience in evangelism, discipleship, and movement building so each student graduates with the skills of ministry (the hands) and not just the head (academics) or the character development (heart).  But until now the Partners in Ministry program, made up of ministry spouses from over 20 countries, has never adopted its own ministry location for the purpose of exposing and training women for spiritual movement building. That has changed!

My small group and I (CHRISTINE) were asked to plan a Valentine’s Day Outreach on relationship for 1,000 9th graders at a local high school. The event was held during the last 2 hours of school and the principle, who recently became a Christian through an IGSL student, asked us to put on the event. I was SO EXCITED! To have the opportunity to share the Gospel with 1,000 High Schoolers while they were at school was an amazing opportunity to me and something we could not do in most places in the world. This was an incredible event on so many levels.

Most of the students at this school live in in makeshift houses on the side of the road (squatters). Most don’t have much money even for food, so we provided a healthy snack for them and gifts of school pens.  We played games, we sang, and a local pastor communicated the gospel.  Based on my experience I was not sure what the response would be, but the students CARED!  They sat on the ground for 2 hours and smiled, participated, and stayed engaged the whole time.  There was a hunger in their eyes for what was being offered.  304 students want us to follow-up with them to learn more about a personal relationship with Jesus.  And one of the best parts about this whole thing is that the IGSL Partners in Ministry Women are going to be doing all the follow up with the female students!

To recap – here’s what was AMAZING!

  • My small group of PIM students had the incredible experience of stepping out in faith together to plan this event and I was able to model to them outreach planning and coach them through the experience.
  • 1000 9th graders heard the gospel, with 304 wanting follow-up. There are contacts and leaders God is raising up for an ongoing ministry at the school!
  • PIM ladies are doing much of the follow up – giving them great opportunities to gain experience and to continue developing their basic ministry and discipleship skills!
  • PIM took a giant step forward in giving our students the real ministry experiences they need to graduate as confident, movement builders – able to initiate and lead multiplying ministries.

We have been here for almost 2 years now and I have to say this was one of my highlights of our whole time here! How incredible that God in his perfect timing would put me at the center of the planning of such a landmark event for the school? But the best part is seeing God use these ladies to proclaim the gospel to these students while at the same time providing much needed ministry experience and skills training for our IGSL women.  Thank you for praying!
