     Merry Christmas!  There’s so much to celebrate of Christ’s entrance into and ongoing work in this world. We wanted to share one story that captures so many aspects of where we see God at work.

Last year a Nepalese man in the student mentoring group I (Brian) lead received deeply discouraging news about his and his wife’s prospects of having a child. I felt led one night to take Morgan with me to go pray with them and spend some time with them.  It was a special night of ministering to them, but also for Morgan and I as it was the first real window she got into the significance of what we are doing here at IGSL.

A couple months later against all odds, this couple discovered they were pregnant in answer to many prayers and they just had their son a few weeks ago.  This past week things came full circle as I took Morgan with me to the baby dedication service where friends from church and IGSL came together to dedicate baby “Shalom” to the Lord. It was a special, international celebration of a communities journey of faith together with this family.

    But it was more than that.  This couple has invested a lot of time, as we’ve shared before, in ministry with a community of Nepali medical students here in Manila. He and others from Nepal at IGSL have been reaching out to the completely Hindu community of Manila Nepali graduate students.  All of these students were invited to the baby dedication and all of them came! They experienced an incredible environment of love and community, while also hearing the gospel shared in a way that was uniquely framed to speak to people from a Hindu background.

It’s a beautiful thing to see God at work in the world – to see people’s journeys of discipleship and faith, to see Christ’s body give witness to the one true God, and to see those who don’t know the Lord get clear invitations into the life they were designed for. We love that we get to be a part of these moments and it is even more special that our kids get to see God at work in these intricate, complex, and most beautiful of ways.  

That is some of what Christmas represents to us this year and we pray that you are blessed in witnessing how God continues to bring glory to Himself by drawing people to Him through His Son.  And we are grateful for your faith in partnering with the Lord in what He is doing around the world!

     Could we give thanks to God if we were imprisoned for our faith?   

That’s the first question that came to our mind when we read the following email update from a former IGSL graduate and current pastor in Bhutan who is facing several years in prison for crimes he did not commit.  We’ve asked you to pray at points, but the final step of the legal journey is coming on December 3rd where he will hear the final verdict of whether he will be released or if he will spend the next few years in a very difficult prison.  Please read Tandin’s first hand account of his journey and of the way God has shown Himself faithful – we think you’ll be glad you did!

“Dear IGSL Faculty,
I bring you greetings from the kingdom of Bhutan!

“I don’t know, how long I will have this freedom with me to communicate with you all, but I will continue to put my trust in the God of Daniel, who was with him during the times of the different reigns of different empires and as well of Joseph, whom God delivered from the dark dungeon.

Last time, during my 5 nights and 6 days in one of the worst imprisonment in South of Bhutan, the story of Joseph came alive to me. The basic red-cross amenities are deprived in this jail and the condition of prisoners are pathetic, made worse by the mistreatment by prison guards. Even, during that situation, I was able to share gospel to my fellow inmate, who was caught with drug issues. I was able to lead him to a dedication prayer.

This was his comment: “I am religious Buddhist person; I never heard someone can forgive my sin! You are telling me that Jesus can forgive me. Then I am going to put my trust in him for my salvation.” That morning, it was Sunday. I have nowhere else to go for worship and indeed that became my worship service, as this fellow inmate, accepted Jesus as His personal Lord and Savior that day! This is not only the incident, even during my 50 days of hardcore military detention during early part of this year. I was able to able to share the gospel to more than 6 military guards about the Salvation in Jesus. I exclusively shared the gospel to them, by bringing in the context of Buddhism and presenting them the pure gospel that “salvation” is ONLY in Jesus!

I have many stories to share of how God kept me alive through this ordeal by giving me specifically dreams and visions! I pray that God will give me time to do this one day with you all! Please do continue to uplift me in your prayer, as my final hearing is on December 3rd.  So, I have one week in my hand, to prepare for this day and your prayer and wisdom on this will be greatly appreciated.

My also thank God who gave me this precious time to spent with my family and my two sons has now completed their Exam. My eldest son Kuenrab will complete his final exam today, November 24th. He is appearing his math paper today! My three sons are also greatly affected by this ordeal but I continue to thank God for gracious love over them. Thank you for your prayers for them.

Till this time, I was able to make both my written and oral defense at the maxim and God’s sovereign hand was on me! He gave me wisdom on how to speak and I was able to present the scripture defense in the court in several occasions. Some of the famous Scriptures quotes were from 1 Tim 2:1-6 & Rom 13:1ff. I will continue to fight for my constitutional right, as long as God gives me strength!

Now, it is almost a year now that I have been through this journey in my life. I have no words to thank all of you, my dear professors, faculty and mentor who have stood with me in your dear prayers! Simultaneously, the education that I have acquired in the IGSL is the reason that I am able to do as well this my intellectual fight! The prosecutor and Office of Attorney General know that I am one of the highly qualified Christian pastor in the Christian community!

Well! I am humbled and I thank God for this. In-fact I am not worthy for this but its God who has helped me to walk through this all this time and it’s only because of His Gracious Hand over me. I thank all of you for your dear support to me and my family. And please continue to do so and don’t forget me as I continue to fight the good fight of faith in my life and your prayer support and love and prayer is key to this fight!
